The Biology Ph.D. program received the 2019 Dean’s Award for Inclusive Excellence in Graduate Education. You’ll get comprehensive training of practical skills in microbiology including sound technique and lab practices for the safe handling of category 2 microorganisms. Areas of excellence in our Department include biotechnology, developmental and integrative biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, genomics, microbiology, toxicology and science pedagogy. Graduate students may earn a master of science in biology.
Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Students who study the biological sciences will be able to pursue many career avenues particularly within research, teaching, sales and in field work roles. Evolution is the change over time that is the engine of biological diversity. Whatever the initial tension between the two disciplines, newer methods and critical insights made their way into evolutionary biology leading to a new area of research traveling under the new banner of molecular evolution.
In your first year, you’ll be in timetabled teaching activities such as lectures, seminars, practical classes and workshops, guided independent study sessions and fieldwork for about 14 hours a week. Kevin Dunbar and his students spent many hours meticulously interviewing real biologists from top laboratories, recording their lab meetings, and reading grant applications and manuscripts of research papers. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops, and supervised time in a studio or workshops and you’ll take part in fieldwork study and guided independent study.
Research into the origin of life, abiogenesis , amounts to an attempt to discover the origin of the first cells. You will study living organisms in a range of environments, both terrestrial and marine, and the content is assessed as part of the first-year examinations. Interdisciplinary in nature, the Biochemistry & Biophysics (BCBP) graduate program includes a broad grounding in the mathematical, chemical, physical, and biological sciences.
You can specialise in the strands of biology that interest you most, such as microbiology and biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, or ecology and evolution. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops, supervised time in a studio or workshop and take part in guided independent study. The Bell Lab is currently extending laboratory investigations of experimental evolution to field scales at the Gault Nature Reserve.

In light of Campus closure regarding COVID-19, employees in the college of Natural and Health Sciences are working remotely and faculty are teaching classes virtually in an effort to best support our campus community. In the biological sciences, a common way to study the impact of a part of a system is to entirely abrogate it. For example, to determine the effect of a gene on an organism, scientists often compare knock-out animals, animals lacking the gene in question, to their wild-type counterparts.
All of these tools for state-of-the-art molecular and integrative biology research — as well as opportunities to do field research on our University farm and in the lush environment around campus — will be available to you as an undergraduate student. Biologists study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution and distribution of living organisms. As a biology major, you might accompany your professors on a field expedition to study seabirds in Alaska, wild eggplants in Australia, giant salamanders in Japan, or bats, bees, and lightning bugs here in Pennsylvania.
